Keeping Up With New Year Resolutions
Another New Year – another time to set new goals for ourselves. If your New Year’s resolutions from last year have gone unresolved, don’t fret! Here are some tips to help you carry out your goals successfully in 2017.
- Pick a goal that matters
Your resolution should not be based on what other people are doing. It has to be something that fits your own values – something meaningful that you’ve wanted to see or change in yourself. When the motivation to do something comes from within – taking steps towards achieving it becomes easier.
- Set realistic goals
The way you describe your goal makes a huge difference. Instead of just saying something ambiguous like ‘You need to get fitter’, set action oriented goals like, ‘I need to work out 3 times a week for an hour each’. When you focus on what you want to bring into your life, think clearly the actions you need to take to achieve it, rather than imagining the end goal.
- Be prepared for failure
We tend to abandon our goals when minor failures and setbacks start piling up. We tend to give up on eating healthy after having one cheat meal. And in that moment your instinct will tell you to drop the goal away. Your task is to embrace failures and plan for them. Ask yourself how are you likely to fail? And use the answers to battle the failures.
- Share your goals with family and friends
Social support is critical. It’s true that it takes some personal courage and vulnerability to share a goal that you might actually fail at, but to dramatically increase the odds of success, you’ll need support from those around you. Get an accountable friend or a family member to check in with you daily or weekly. It’s easy to break a promise to yourself but far hard to admit it to a friend.
- Schedule it
We’re sure you have said you can’t find the time to do something. Nobody finds time, we choose time. We all choose to spend our time the way we do – whether it’s going to the gym or shopping at the mall. Make your new goals a priority and schedule them into your calendar. Set reminders and alarms to get you into the routine.
Keep these tips in mind and and approach your resolutions like you would any serious event in your life and you’ll surely be able to achieve them.
